STRASBOURG'S CHRISTMAS MARKET

  • STRASBOURG'S CHRISTMAS MARKET

    Willkomme im Strossburi Christkindelsmärik !

The first Christmas market in France took place, in one of the most beautiful cities in France, Strasbourg (we promise to be completely objective!).

But how did this beautiful story begin? Let's go back in time, shall we?

In 1570, Pastor Johannes Flinner, leader of the Protestant Reformation, wanted to ban the celebration of Saint Nicholas' Day.

The merchants didn't appreciate this decision, as this holiday was the occasion to hold a large fair. In a city like Strasbourg, it's hard to leave the merchants unhappy. A compromise was reached: There was still a fair, but two things changed: it no longer took place on December 6th (Saint Nicholas' Day, you guessed it), but three days before Christmas, and it was organized in honor of the Christ Child (Christkindel).

Year after year, the Christmas market continues to grow, welcoming more and more fans of the Christmas spirit (and certainly mulled wine!). In 2023, it welcomed no fewer than 3.3 million visitors!

The Christmas capital will be adorned with its most beautiful lights and decorations, but also, of course, its iconic Christmas tree, which will proudly stand 30 meters tall on Place Kléber. This year, no fewer than 300 chalets await you to celebrate the Christmas spirit.

One last piece of information for the more curious among you: It's not just one Christmas market that awaits you, but no fewer than 11!

All are located on the Grande Île.

Several squares on the Grande Île host the various markets with varied themes. Place Broglie, Place Kléber, and the terrace of the Palais Rohan await you! You can explore the other markets while strolling amidst the scent of mulled wine and singing.

You can download the Christmas market map HERE as well as the detailed program!

For more information, we invite you to visit the official market website to best prepare for your visit.
